Dominick Reyes says people are tired of Jon Jones’s antics.
For much of the past year, the MMA world stood in waiting for the possible return of Jon Jones and a heavyweight title unification bout with Tom Aspinall. It never came. Instead, Jones played coy for months before finally officially stepping away from the sport, leaving Aspinall to be promoted to undisputed champion.
Except maybe not. Shortly after his retirement, Jones announced he would be returning to competition in the hopes of fighting at the theorized UFC White House card next July. Unfortunately for Jones, UFC CEO Dana White wasn’t in love with the idea given Jones’s unreliability, and plenty of fans felt the same. And for Reyes, who has history with Jones, it’s because the light heavyweight GOAT incinerated any good will he had with his antics.
“I think because he does this thing that he does, and he just strings everyone along, and he lies, and tells this and says that,” Reyes told the Pound-4-Pound podcast. “And he’s smug about it and arrogant. He’s not being genuine. We just want a genuine answer out of you, bro. Not some bullcrap string everybody a long, ‘Oh, well, maybe this, uhhhh.’ Are you going to fight or not? I think that’s what everybody’s mad about, trying to play with all of us.
“If you’re done, say you’re done. If you’re not done, say, ‘Let’s go, but I want more money, or I want this.’ That’s it. Don’t say, ‘We’ll see! There’s a big announcement coming out, and then it’s nothing. I think that’s why people were so mad.”
Reyes has a special history with Jones. The two fought for the light heavyweight belt at UFC 247, with Jones winning a highly controversial decision. Most fans that evening felt Reyes should have been the man to dethrone Jones, including Dana White. White wanted an immediate rematch for Reyes after the decision, but in lieu of quelling the controversy, Jones vacated his title and took a hiatus from the sport, foreshadowing Jones’s situation with Aspinall.
“I did!” Reyes said when asked if he wanted another shot at Jones. “If you guys don’t remember after that fight, I lobbied for the rematch for an entire year and he said, ‘Drop the belt’ and went to heavyweight. Literally that’s what happened. People forget that, too. He ran from me! He said, ‘You’re not paying me enough to fight that guy. He’s too dangerous.’ That was literally his response.”
Whether Jones actually fights again is unknown, but if he returns, it will likely be at heavyweight, meaning Reyes will never get a second shot at Jones. However, the former two-time title challenger is currently on a three-fight winning streak and on the door of title contention. He faces Carlos Ulberg in the main event of UFC Perth next month, and after that, he thinks it’s not a very long road to the title he should have won so many years ago.
“Fight Khalil, beat Khalil. Then I’ll probably have to fight again, I’d probably have to fight Jiri [Prochazka],” Reyes said of his road to the title. “I would love to rematch Jiri. That would be awesome. And then fight for the title, whoever has it. I’d like it to be one, but I know they’re not going to make it that easy for me.”

I don’t even have a comment on this. What is the UFCs plan for heavyweight if we are cutting well known names like rozenstruick as well as winning unranked fighters like Buday https://t.co/e8JChVjnEv
