Missed Fists: Bryanna Power slam knockout crushes opponent into canvas

Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists where we shine a light on fights from across the globe that may have been overlooked in these hectic times where it seems like there’s an MMA show every other day.

Just last month, I discussed a couple of finishes in which nominative determinism might have played a role, and while I’m personally not a believer in that sort of thing, recent combat sports happenings are giving the theory more and more validity.

(Big thanks as always to @Barrelelapierna for their weekly lists of the best KOs and submissions, and to @Grabaka_Hitman for uploading many of the clips you see here. Give them a follow and chip in on Patreon if you can.)

Bryanna Power vs. Bellana Spelt

To say Bryanna Power lived up to her name here would be a major understatement:

At a New England Fights event in Portland, Maine, the amateur bantamweight scooped opponent Bellana Spelt into the air and folded her in half with a concussive slam. That looked so nasty in slow motion and while Spelt might have been recovering when the referee waved the bout off, you can’t blame him for erring on the side of caution here. If anything, he maybe wanted to pause the action to make sure the impact didn’t break the mat.

Pure Power, indeed.

Niklas Stolze vs. Matous Kohout

We go now from the amateur scene to a former UFC pro competing at an Oktagon event in Oberhausen, Germany.

Niklas Stolze had an unfortunate 0-3 run with the American promotion after facing some stiff competition (he was the first of Benoit Saint Denis’ five straight finishes) and now finds himself scrapping back in his home country. There’s no shame in that and you certainly can’t argue with the results.

In this past Saturday’s co-main event, Stolze landed a beautiful jumping knee that Matous Kohout ducked right into and then finished him off with an explosive 1-2. He doesn’t turn 32 until December, so if Stolze can rattle off a couple more wins, don’t be surprised if he gets the call to fill a slot the next time the UFC holds a card near his region anytime soon.

Jhonatan Cordeiro vs. Toni Maciel

Brazilian lightweight Jhonatan Cordeiro also set up a knockout with a spectacular strike, turning on the spin cycle before sending his opponent’s mouthpiece flying with a left hand.

That mouthpiece is gone gone. It’s in the same realm as the guitar that Prince threw into the heavens that one time.

Zelim Zubairaev vs. Axel Nobou
Emile Vujakovic vs. Arturs Ozolins
Summer Onley vs. Flordinice Muniz
Ryan Hewitt vs. Redgie Hingston
Saeed Abi-Issa vs. Bernie Liu
Radley Da Silva vs. Drake Randall

As for the rest of this week’s best MMA finishes, all you have to do is load up your trusty UFC Fight Pass to check them out.

At Fight Club Rush 21 in Stockholm, Sweden, Zelim Zubairaev pulled an Uno reverse card on Axel Nobou, turning submission defense into offense in a flash.

Over at Full Contact Contender 39 in Liverpool, England, Emile Vujakovic landed a spinning backfist that was so quick and clean it almost looked accidental.

When in doubt, spin! Never goes wrong in MMA. Never, ever. One hundred percent success rate, just like jumping the gilly.

I don’t know what Summer Onley is doing to train that right hand, but she was eager to show it off as she brutalized Flordinice Muniz’s chin.

Look at how she snapped Muniz’s head back with that last shot. Nasty work.

There’s short hooks and then there’s what amateur Saeed Abi-Issa landed at Battlefield Fight League 81 in Vancouver, Canada.

I’m telling you, fighters just be throwing stuff out there sometimes and not even knowing what they’re doing. In this case, what Abi-Issa was doing was scoring a highlight-reel knockout, even if that wasn’t the plan when he flicked this glove out. That’s just such a short punch. That’s the Gustavo Balart of punches.

If you’re looking for a shot thrown with slightly more force, make sure you check out Radley Da Silva’s absurd spinning heel kick knockout, in case you missed it.

Pennueng Paeminburi vs. Inca Petsimuen

Now that the mixing of the martial arts out of the way, we couldn’t end this week’s feature without mentioning Pennueng Paeminburi.

Pennueng showed supernatural speed, flexibility, and coordination here, catching a kick from Inca Petsimuen and then destroying him with a high kick of his own.

Enjoy.

I can’t even blame the referee for not making one of those viral Muay Thai saves because no one—especially Inca—saw that one coming.
