Well, here’s something you don’t see every day.
On Saturday, PFL Europe 2 went down from ING Arena in Brussels, Belgium, and on the undercard, one of the rarest submission in MMA happened when Levi Batchelor submitted Fahdi Khaled with an Ezekiel choke.
While a common maneuver in Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition, Ezekiel chokes are a rarity in MMA due to the lack of grips provided by the gi. However, they’re not entirely unheard of as it was a trademark move of heavyweight Aleksei Oleinik, who finished 14 fights by Ezekiel choke in his career. Still, it’s not often seen, especially at the lower weight classes, but clearly no one told Batchelor that.
With their bantamweight bout winding down, Batchelor was in side control against Khaled, threatening an arm-triangle choke. When Khaled defended, Batchelor switched to the Ezekiel choke, locking it on and squeezing. A confusing moment occurred when Khaled appeared to be tapping, but also may have simply been punching Batchelor, who then released the choke. Fortunately, there was no controversy as when Batchelor stood up to celebrate, it was clear Khaled had gone to sleep.
Check out the unique submission below.
