One of the brightest young stars in PFL is now in the fight of his life.

On Tuesday, Russian media broke the news that PFL featherweight champion Timur Khizriev was shot five times with rubber bullets in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia. Khizriev is reportedly in stable condition, but suffered numerous injuries to the shoulder, hand, and chest, and is undergoing surgery.

Khizriev was reportedly ambushed by two men in the courtyard of a residential building as he was exiting his vehicle. Police apprehended one suspect, but two more reportedly escaped. Eye witnesses said Khizriev’s assailants shouted insults at Khizriev’s family as they fled.

There is also, allegedly, video of the incident.

Khizriev’s team confirmed to MMA Fighting that the incident occurred and that Khizriev is recovering in the hospital and not in life-threatening danger.

PFL released a statement Wednesday regarding the reported incident stating they are aware of what happened, and sending along their best wishes towards one of their rising stars.

“PFL is aware of the situation concerning Timur Khizriev, and remain in close touch with his representatives,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts are with him and his family during this time.”

Undefeated at 18-0, the 29-year-old Khizriev previously fought for Bellator before joining the PFL in 2024, where he advanced to the tournament finals on the back of three decision wins. Khizriev then took a unanimous decision over Brendan Loughnane at the PFL Championships to claim the featherweight title.
