Merab Dvalishvili vs. Sean O’Malley 2. The rematch we’ve all been waiting for? Not exactly.

UFC 316 has its main event and it features the reigning bantamweight champion defending against O’Malley, the man he beat for the belt back at UFC 306 this past September. That contest saw Dvalishvili dominate much of the action with his relentless wrestling, but O’Malley maintained afterwards that he felt he did better than the scorecards suggested and has campaigned for a rematch since.

Dvalishvili went on to successfully defend his title against undefeated challenger Umar Nurmagomedov while O’Malley stayed on the sidelines recovering from hip surgery, and now O’Malley gets another crack at Dvalishvili on June 7 in Newark, N.J., without having to book another fight in between.

To say fans aren’t all in on O’Malley being granted an immediate rematch is an understatement and you can check out some of the more venomous reactions to the UFC 316 headliner announcement below.

O'Malley rematch feels like the biggest waste of time?

Tomato Can
O'Malley getting an immediate rematch after getting dominated following as uninspiring a title reign as possible is some straight up April Fool's shit.

Ah yes Sean getting tile shot no. 2 having defended his belt once against a cherry pick before losing it.
Let's say he wins it even...it still cheapens the belts and his reign. There was no immediate rematch for Sterling. There will be no immediate rematch for Merab. Meanwhile Sean, rather than having to run the gauntlet, is fast tracked to an eliminator and then to a rematch after losing the belt.

Remember when UFCs edge over Boxing was the title fights being for the most deserving contender
In the past year title shots given to
Stipe, Khalil Rountree, Kai Asakura, Steve Erceg, Dustin Poirier, Marlon Vera, Jiri getting a 2nd shot at Alex, Shevchenko getting a 3rd chance with Grasso, Izzy and Juliana Pena in a similar fashion to Suga here. I'll give Moicano a pass due to the circumstances, we got Stickland after beating Costa, Hill got a shot off an injury after only winning the vacant belt, Max getting yet another title shot also.
Belal, Ilia, DDP, Anka, Suarez and perhaps Umar might be the only legit times you could say they are without a doubt the guy who deserves the next shot

Hey Dana, what about Jones vs Aspinall?

Well, once seanald loses again we won't have to hear from him. His wrestling is non existent. Undeserved title shot for sure but what else is new

TheSesameStreetCount
I actually thought this was an April fools booking, wtf

So tired of the UFC matchmaking.
How many title fights from the past 5 years have been rematches? Most of which are probably back to back for at least one of the fighters.
How did this become the norm?
How many people are dying to see Periera-Ankalaev II? Or were clamoring for DDP-Strickland II? If Belal Muhammad loses, he'll probably get a rematch cause "who else ya gonna give it to?" Or whatever dumb reason....then if he gets one of course Islam is entitled to one....
I blame these ridiculous public rankings. Kamaru Usman is still ranked in the top 5 at 170.

This is why I no longer pay to watch UFC

What a terrible joke. Should be Merab vs Umar 2. Ommalley showed nothing vs Merab while Umar won the first 2 and a half rounds.

Patanouk
Simply pathetic, might as well make Conor vs Islam for the next lightweight title match at this point...
