Joel Alvarez won’t be fighting at UFC 315.
“El Fenomeno” announced Sunday via Instagram that a hand injury has forced him out of his lightweight fight with Benoit Saint Denis, which was scheduled to take place at this Saturday’s pay-per-view event at Bell Center in Montreal. News of Alvarez’s withdrawal was first reported by MagicM.
See Alvarez’s Instagram post below.
According to Alvarez, he has suffered a hand injury that he expects will restrict his training for three weeks. He did not give a timetable for when he plans to compete next.
It is not yet known if his bout with Saint Denis will be scheduled for another date, if a new opponent will be sought for Saint Denis for Saturday, or if both fighters will receive new opponents at a later date.
Alvarez (22-3) is on a three-fight win streak and has won seven of his past eight fights. All 22 of his pro victories have come by way of knockout or submission.
The same is true of Saint Denis (13-3-1, 1 NC). The French fighter has 13 finishes to his name, though he is currently on a two-fight skid after losses to Renato Moicano and Dustin Poirier.
UFC 315 is headlined by a pair of title fights, with Belal Muhammad defending the welterweight championship against Jack Della Maddalena in the main event, and Valentina Shevchenko defending the flyweight title against Manon Fiorot in the co-main event.
