Alexander Volkanovski competes at UFC 314 in what could be one of the final fights of his storied career and it looks like he already has other career plans in mind.
This Saturday, Volkanovski takes on Diego Lopes in a bout for the vacant featherweight title, with Volkanovski aiming to become a two-time champion. Ahead of that main event, the Australian star released a comedy skit in partnership with Sportsbet in which he reveals he’s been moonlighting as a successful musician and producer all this time.
Check out the amazing video below.
Volkanovski and Sportsbet previously partnered up on a pair of well-received sketches in which the fighter was portrayed as a weary senior (playing up on critics saying he was past his prime). Though the “Old Man Volk” character fared poorly at UFC 298 as he dropped his featherweight title to Ilia Topuria via knockout, that didn’t stop Volkanovski from later revisiting the concept.
This time around, Volkanovski takes fans on a musical journey, parodying a number of genres—he clarified at UFC 314 media day that the vocals were not his—from power pop to grunge to Eurovision fodder to hair metal to good old-fashioned country music and more. There are also some incredible references to Nirvana and The Beatles, with Volkanovski being compared to music legend Paul McCartney.
Volkanovski also expresses his excitement at chasing win No. 27 and joining the “27 Club,” a darkly humorous reference to famous musicians (including Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse, among many others) that died at the age of 27.
The latest sketch didn’t come out of nowhere, as Volkanovski recently showed off his vocal talents at a UFC 314 press conference when he spontaneously sang the Secondhand Serenade track Fall for You in ode to Lopes.
