Bryce Mitchell seems to get just as much attention for what he says outside the cage as the work he puts in whenever he actually fights, but lately he’s received a much more negative reaction from fans.
That’s largely due to the inane rant Mitchell unleashed on his podcast back in January when he defended Adolf Hitler and denied the Holocaust happened. Prior to those offensive statements, Mitchell typically stuck to his favorite conspiracy theories like claiming that the Earth was flat and stating he “just don’t believe” in seat belts.
UFC legend Matt Brown certainly doesn’t agree with much of what Mitchell has spouted lately, but he’s also quick to point out it’s easy to forget the occupation they both chose for a living.
“Realistically, we’re dealing with MMA fighters here,” Brown said on The Fighter vs. The Writer. “There’s a lot of whack jobs in this sport. There’s a reason why people, myself included, why we choose going down the path of being an MMA fighter and not going to college or not getting a regular job or opening a business. There’s a reason we choose to put our life on the line in front of millions of people to make money. It’s not because we’re sane f*cking normal motherf*ckers. There’s no good business model there.
“Why do you think all of us fighters get taken advantage of by the UFC? We’re all exploited like f*cking peasants because we’re all a bunch of f*cking dummies. We’re not a bunch of people with college degrees and shit. I mean there are some guys with college degrees and to be fair there’s some extremely intelligent fighters, I like to think of myself as one, but you can’t just lump everybody in and be like, ‘Look at these genius motherf*ckers that decided to put their lives on the line for others’ entertainment to make money.’ That’s also what makes it exciting, right? We’re all a bunch of f*cking nutjobs. Bryce just happens to be kind of the top of the list of those. He’s a little bit closer to the edge.”
Brown has no idea if Mitchell, who returns to action on Saturday against Jean Silva at UFC 314, truly believes everything he’s saying publicly but there’s no denying the massive amount of attention the former Ultimate Fighter contestant has received from those statements.
There’s a part of Brown that feels like Mitchell made a splash with some of his controversial opinions. He thinks it’s possible Mitchell’s name exploded in headlines and through social media and he saw that as an opening to lean even harder into the character he created.
“That’s the unfortunate part about the world we live in these days, too,” Brown said. “The basis of human psychology is every human most of what we do in our lives is running towards reward or away from punishment.
“When you say something crazy or stupid and then you’re rewarded for it, your brain is naturally going to start thinking what’s the next stupid, crazy thing I can say? Then if you say something enough, you start to believe it.”
Maybe that’s really what happened to Mitchell when it comes to some of his more eye-rolling opinions he expresses, but Brown doesn’t think that should totally condemn him in the court of public opinion.
“I do think Bryce is a good dude,” Brown said. “I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he’s just a little bit lesser IQ than some other people, but I don’t like judging people for simply having a lesser IQ.”
