Ian Machado Garry is confident he’ll put a stop to the Fight Nerds hype at UFC Kansas City.

“The Future” headlines the April 26 card in a welterweight bout against fast-rising contender Carlos Prates. It’s been an incredible start to Prates’ UFC career as the hard-hitting Brazilian has won his first four fights for the promotion, all by knockouts that garnered him Performance of the Night bonuses. Overall, Prates has won 11 straight fights as he heads into his clash with the No. 6-ranked Garry.

Garry isn’t impressed. In a recently uploaded clip, he was shown critiquing one of Prates’ past losses, calling him a “quitter.”

“This is a video of Carlos Prates and his true fighting spirit,” Garry said. “It’s called being a quitter.”

“He had just been beaten up all the rounds prior,” Garry continued. “Puts his hand up, shakes his head, says, ‘I’m done,’ and then just drops to the ground in absolute despair because he knows that deep down he’s not a fighter.”

The bout in question involves Prates suffering a loss to Mikhail Romanchuk in January 2017 at an event in China. Watch that full fight below.

Garry is in error mentioning “rounds prior” as the bout ended in a little over two minutes into Round 1, but the action did go poorly for Prates. Romanchuk came out throwing haymakers and never stopped, putting Prates on defense for the duration of the fight. An exchange of heavy punches against the fence preceded the TKO finish.

Following that loss, Prates went on to win 14 of his next 15 bouts, with only one of those victories needing the scorecards (it should also be noted five of Prates’ six career lasses have come by knockout or submission in the first round). His past two wins have come against veterans Neil Magny and Li Jingliang, but this marks Prates’ first opportunity to crack the top 10 of the always competitive welterweight division.

Garry (15-1) is coming off of the first loss of his pro career. He stepped in on short notice to fight unbeaten contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 this past December and lost a unanimous decision after a competitive three-round fight. Prior to that contest, Garry had won his first eight UFC fights.
