Dricus du Plessis sent a callout Alex Pereira’s direction after his impressive main event win at UFC 312.
Du Plessis dominated Sean Strickland over five rounds to retain the middleweight title in a rematch this past Saturday. Following the win, “Stillknocks” looked at Pereira — who was in Strickland’s corner — and said, “Is there no one else? Is there no one else?”
After the fight card in Sydney, former two-division champ Daniel Cormier, who called the action with Jon Anik and Michael Bisping, reveals what Pereira told him about du Plessis’ challenge on his YouTube channel.
“In the octagon, he calls out Alex Pereira,” Cormier said. “I told Pereira after the fight, I go, ‘He wants you, Pereira.’
“Pereira goes, ‘He’s just too small.’ Seriously. Pereira goes, ‘This man is just too small.’”
During the post-fight press conference, du Plessis made it perfectly clear that Khamzat Chimaev would be next for him in his attempt to earn his third championship defense.
Upon reflection, while a champ vs. champ fight between du Plessis and Pereira would do great business, Cormier agrees with du Plessis that he needs to get through Chimaev before thinking about adding a second belt to the collection.
“Alex is huge though,” Cormier said. “He looked massive compared to Dricus. And I love that Dricus has these big goals, I just think he has work to do at middleweight before he starts thinking about going up — Khamzat Chimaev being problem No. 1.
“Watching Dricus [on Saturday], I don’t know that Chimaev just drives across the mat and takes him down. He’s so good at what he does. ... He’s the man. Dricus du Plessis is the man, and he once again proved that [at UFC 312].”
