Daniel Cormier won’t deny the greatness of his career-nemesis Jon Jones, but he’s not ready to call Jones the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts history.
Cormier met Jones on two different occasions with the UFC light heavyweight title on the line. Jones won a decision in their first battle at UFC 182 in 2015, and in the rematch, Jones delivered a head kick knockout to Cormier at UFC 214 over two years later. However, Jones failed a drug test and the result was overturned to a No Contest.
During Friday’s UFC 312 Fan Q&A, Cormier was asked if Jones was the GOAT.
“You guys always do that and, honestly, you can’t deny his greatness,” Cormier said. “Look at what he’s done: The guy has now fought through three generations of fighter — he fought that early generation with [Lyoto] Machida and them, he went through my generation, and now he’s fighting a whole other generation of guys.
“So, yeah, of course, he’s one of the greatest fighters of all-time, but when you do dirty shit, you don’t get to be called the greatest of all-time.”
The post-UFC 214 failed test was not the first incident Cormier dealt with when it came to Jones. The historic rivals were slated to compete in the main event of UFC 200 in July 2016, but days before the fight, Jones was removed due to an anti-doping violation. A heartbroken Cormier remained on the card and face longtime middleweight champ Anderson Silva on super short notice, winning the bout via unanimous decision.
Jones went on to regain the light heavyweight title after Cormier focused on defending his heavyweight championship, defended it on three occasions, and then moved up to heavyweight himself and captured his second divisional championship — which Jones still currently holds.
