Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson makes his full transformation into UFC legend Mark Kerr in the first trailer for the new film The Smashing Machine from writer and director Benny Safdie.
The highly anticipated film that lands in theaters on Oct 3. documents Kerr’s successful but then troubled career after he was a two-time UFC tournament champion but then he got addicted to painkillers and narcotics after enduring numerous injuries from fighting and wrestling.
The film is largely based upon a 2002 documentary of the same name that followed Kerr from his very successful run in the UFC to a fresh start in his fighting career after signing with PRIDE FC in Japan but early success there eventually gave way to his addictions taking over again.
Oscar nominated actress Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s ex-wife Dawn Staples, who was omnipresent throughout the original documentary on the fighter’s life.
Former Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader also plays a major role in the film as UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman, who was once Kerr’s rival but ended up serving as his mentor as he looked to get his career back on track. The documentary detailed how Kerr struggled to reach the same heights in PRIDE while it was Coleman who eventually resurrected his career when he won the first ever PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Boxing heavyweight champion Oleskandr Usyk portrays Igor Vovchanchyn, a Russian legend who faced Kerr in PRIDE while Bas Rutten actually plays himself in the movie after he had a prominent role in the original documentary as well.
Additional fighters like James Moontasri, Satoshi Ishii and Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu also appear in the movie.
Safdie, who came to fame working alongside his brother Josh Safdie on films such as Uncut Gems, is making his directorial debut.
Check out the new trailer and get ready for The Smashing Machine to land in theaters nationwide on Oct. 3
