Rob Font has a new opponent for next week’s UFC Seattle after Dominick Cruz’s injury and subsequent retirement. Jean Matsumoto, who was slated to face Chris Gutierrez at UFC 313, was brought in as a late-notice replacement for the Feb. 22 show.
Font vs. Matsumoto will be contested in a catchweight of 140 pounds in Seattle. Multiple people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the change to MMA Fighting following a report by MMAjunkie.
It’s still unclear if Gutierrez will get a new opponent for the March 8 pay-per-view show in Las Vegas.
Font (21-8) was victorious in his most recent octagon appearance, winning a decision over Kyler Phillips in October. Font scored big wins throughout his UFC career against the likes of Cody Garbrandt, Marlon Moraes and Sergio Pettis, but looks to regain momentum after going 2-4 in his past six.
Matsumoto (16-0) is one of the hottest prospects coming out of Brazil today, going 2-0 so far under the UFC banner with wins over Dan Argueta and Brad Katona in 2024. The 25-year-old bantamweight signing with the UFC after decisioning Kasey Tanner at Dana White’s Contender Series in late 2023.
